Rule of thumb: at our defaults, Claude Sonnet 5.5 on the API costs about $1.62 an hour. If that times your monthly hours beats $100, Max 5× is the better deal, as long as you stay within its usage limits.

How much does Claude Code cost?

Claude Code is included in the Claude Pro plan ($20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly) and the Max plans (from $100 a month for 5× Pro usage, $200 for 20×), each with usage limits. You can also pay per token with an API key, at the API prices below.

Is Max cheaper than paying for the API?

If you code with Claude for more than an hour or two most days, usually yes. With our default assumptions (4 hours a day, 21 days a month), Claude Sonnet 5.5 at API prices comes to about $136 a month and Claude Opus 5.5 about $272. Plans have usage caps, so heavy users can still hit limits.

How many tokens does Claude Code use per hour?

It varies a lot with repo size and how agentic you let it be. Each turn resends the conversation and file context, so an active hour can process millions of input tokens, most of them cache reads. Our default is 3M input tokens an hour, 90% cached, and 60K output tokens; change them to match your usage.

How do I see what Claude actually costs per product?
